For his last race, he put a bomb in his rival's boat, and when it went off, his own boat collided with the one that had just exploded, severely injuring him. After spending years in prison hospital, he escaped and went after the daughter of the man he had killed, blaming the dead man for his horrific injuries. Now a hunchback, he hid out in a shed at Cache Lake when the annual boat race was held there and plotted to kill the girl, thwarted each time by the private investigator Speed Savage. Speed discovered the shed where Backle was hiding out and tried to stop him, but was attacked by the madman and left to die. Rescuing himself, he investigated Backle and uncovered the story behind his madness. Eventually, at the ball after the race, the hunchback revealed himself to the girl, who seemed to recognize him as Backle. Admitting that it had been thought he was dead, he told her he had returned to bring her a gift of acid for her lovely face! Speed Savage, as the Silver Sabre, intervened and killed Backle in a fierce fight, rescuing the girl and ending his threat forever. |
